Chronicles of the 5 Sacred Jyotirlingas
1. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga: The Godavari Descent
Located at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills, Trimbakeshwar is where the sacred river Godavari flows into the world. The history dates back to Gautama Rishi, who performed severe penance here to bring the Ganga down to earth to wash away his sins. Lord Shiva, pleased by his devotion, manifested as a Jyotirlinga.
Architectural Fact: The current black stone temple was built by Peshwa Nanasaheb in the mid-18th century. It is world-renowned for its unique Linga structure, which contains three thumbnails representing the Hindu Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Over time, the Linga is eroding due to the constant flow of water from the hills.
2. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga: Victory over Tripurasura
Deep in the Sahyadris, the legend of Bhimashankar revolves around the fierce battle between Lord Shiva and the demon Tripurasura. It is said that the sweat from Lord Shiva's body after the battle formed the River Bhima. The temple is one of the oldest in the country, with inscriptions dating back to the 13th century.
Heritage Value: The temple is build in the Nagara style of architecture. While the original shrine is ancient, the structural enhancements were made by Nana Phadnavis. The temple is nestled within a protected wildlife sanctuary, offering a rare blend of spiritual and natural peace.
3. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga: The Devotion of Ghushma
Grishneshwar, or the Lord of Compassion, is the 12th Jyotirlinga. The legend tells of a pious devotee named Ghushma whose son was murdered by her own jealous sister. Despite the tragedy, Ghushma continued her Shiva worship at the pond. Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva restored her son to life and chose to stay in the form of this Jyotirlinga.
Historical Resilience: Having survived multiple destructions during the Mughal era, the temple was magnificently rebuilt in the 18th century by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. It is situated just 1 km away from the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Ellora Caves.
4. Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga: The Pandava Legacy
Believed to be the 8th Jyotirlinga, Aundha Nagnath is said to have been constructed by Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, during their exile. The temple architecture is a masterpiece of the Seuna (Yadava) dynasty, featuring intricate sculptures of dancers and musicians.
A Sacred Miracle: A famous local legend speaks of the great Saint Namdev. When he was asked by temple priests to move away from the front of the Lord, he went west. Miraculously, the entire temple rotated to face the devotee, demonstrating that God is everywhere.
5. Parli Vaijnath Jyotirlinga: Vaidyanath - The Healer
Parli Vaijnath is uniquely known as the "Healer's Temple." According to the Puranas, it is here that the Amrit (Nectar of Immortality) was kept. Lord Shiva resides here as Vaidyanath (The Lord of Physicians). The mountain surrounding the temple is rich with medicinal herbs, reinforcing the healing aura of the shrine.
Significance: The temple was once again restored by the devotee-queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Pilgrims are allowed to touch the Jyotirlinga here, and it is believed that doing so can cure many physical and mental ailments. It is a vital stop for those seeking both spiritual and physical well-being.
